Recap

During this expedition, present undergraduate students of the Transformational Leaders Program at the University of Notre Dame were introduced to river travel using packrafts. The majority of their journey was spent navigating the river, leisurely paddling through the magnificent Labyrinth Canyon in Utah, and indulging in two days of canyoneering within Moab's captivating canyons. Each night, they set up camp in the great outdoors, where they engaged in meaningful conversations reflecting on their shared experiences.

Participants’ Key Takeaways

  • What was most meaningful to me was being able to relax. I believe I really benefited from floating down the river because it was so calming.

  • Almost every aspect of this trip exceeded my expectations. Going in, I wasn't sure I would be able to form deep relationships with people on the trip. I most definitely did! I found so much beauty in the desert that I never expected I would appreciate.

  • I really enjoyed being away from technology. I felt more present and satisfied with the experience because I didn’t touch my phone for the entire week.

  • My body became the source of joy, not anxiety, fear, or hatred.

  • I was able to surpass my fear of heights and insects throughout the trip. I was out of my comfort zone which made me grow as a person.

  • I loved each and everyone's stories. I was able to relate and understand everyone on a more personal level.

  • Since we were coming from the front country where much of our focus was on the small things in life, I was glad that through this experience, I could focus on the bigger picture.
